In 1985; a year after the basketball legend was drafted into the NBA, Michael Jordan met Juanita Vanoy, through a mutual friend, at a Bennigan's restaurant in Chicago. Born on June 13, 1959, in Chicago. Juanita Vanoy grew up in Southside Chicago, she’s a former model and a former executive secretary for the American Bar Association. When she met Michael, she was a loan officer looking to get her associate's degree. Although Michael Jordan was 4years younger than Juanita Vanoy, they started seeing each other and soon began dating. Contrary to the popularly peddled rumor, that Juanita was a random fan, who threw herself at Michael Jordan, so he would notice her… this is however untrue. Michael Jordan wrote in his autobiography that he admired how Juanita waited for him to notice her, rather than throw herself at him, as was the case with other girls he had met at that time. Michael proposed to Juanita, on New Year’s Eve of 1987. Juanita said yes to the proposal. However, for unknown reasons, they decided to call off the engagement.
Michael was a master at shooting round-leather balls into hoops, turns out shooting balls was not the only thing he had mastery of… As at the time of the canceled engagement, Juanita Vanoy was pregnant, and on 18 November 1988, she welcomed her first son, Jeffrey Michael Jordan. However, Michael Jordan denied being the father of the child. Juanita was eager to get the required financial backing to raise her child, so she hired the services of a legal representative, and Michael Jordan was served a paternity suit. In a bid to protect his image, Michael Jordan consulted with his lawyers, and made an agreement with the lawyers of Jaunita to handle the matter privately. However, on September 2nd, 1989, the couple tied the knot at Little White Chapel in Las Vegas, with 10 months old Jeffrey Michael Jordan by their side. Before the wedding, Juanita Vanoy pulled a surprise, when she contacted her lawyers to prepare a prenuptial agreement, as she and Michael Jordan were getting married, amidst discussions of resolving the paternity suit. Whilst the paperwork was being arranged, Michael Jordan and Juanita, alongside some friends jetted off to a bachelor’s party in Las Vegas, to prepare for their wedding. On the wedding eve, Micheal told Juanita he wanted them to get married in the absence of his friends, because he felt they would raise their hands when the priest asked if there was anyone, who didn’t want the two to be joined. According to Michael Jordan, it was a prevalent belief amongst his friends, that marriage was a distraction, that took away attention and would ultimately limit their commitment to their friendship. Michael and Juanita, allegedly slipped away to the Little White Wedding Chapel at 3:30am. With both couples clothed in jeans, they got married. Juanita Vanoy called her lawyer: Michael Milton to tell him of her new status… the surprised lawyer who had been working on her prenuptial agreement said: "I congratulated her and then reminded her that the prenup had not been signed.” The new Mrs Juanita Vanoy Jordan, brushed it off and asked for a postnuptial agreement to be prepared instead, in her words: “All that matters is we love each other.” It apparently took Michael Milton, who had already been trying to negotiate terms with Jordan's representatives for two months, an additional year and a half to work things out. Although the conclusion of the agreement lingered, In 1991, Jordan signed the postnup, Jordan's lawyers later claimed that Juanita's lawyer had: "negotiated terms that were 'extremely beneficial and greatly exceeded any statutory benefit Vanoy Jordan would have received under Illinois law.” The couple settled into their life as a family, and on 24th December, 1990, the Jordan’s welcomed their second son: Jasmine Jordan… approximately a year later, on 7th December 1992, they also welcomed their daughter Jasmine Jordan. Although Michael Jordan could handle himself on the basketball court, he however depended largely on Juanita Vanoy to handle their personal lives. Juanita was very supportive… taking care of the kids, the home as well as Michael’s career, even as he became more successful, got more endorsement deals and began to spend more time with friends. Juanita began to feel iced out, although she stayed away from the public eye and was seemingly quiet, Washington Post reported that: “Anyone who knows Juanita Jordan will tell you that she has never been intimidated by Michael Jordan, never blinded by the basketball legend's money and fame — and that she always knew where she stood in the game”
