With a Grammy under his belt after his critically acclaimed album, IGOR, Tyler, The Creator, embarks on a new landscape of sound with a sense of swagger and confidence that has been turned to the max and is on full display with his latest album, “CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST”.
Starting his album rollout with a bang, the initial reaction to the first single “LUMBERJACK” was mostly one of surprise and anticipation. Reeling away from the more experimental, pop and soul influenced “IGOR”, Tyler opted to dive headfirst back into hip-hop, specifically grazing the underground sound that has re-emerged with artists like Westside Gunn, Freddie Gibbs and Earl Sweatshirt. Not only is he revisiting straightforward, classic hip-hop but Tyler has also only gotten better in his writing, flow, delivery and just overall cadence since his last full fleshed rap album.
Besides the technical skill that is showcased in this album, the way that Tyler crafts the story that is the foundation of this album goes to show why he’s one of the best artists of our time.
Time and time again, Tyler creates these fantastical stories that go hand in hand with his albums and each time they start out with the listener’s full attention and end with a beautiful, thought-out conclusion. The theme that surrounds this album is one of a forbidden love which has been an ongoing subject for most of Tyler’s albums. The love that is on the forefront of Tyler’s mind this time is one that is between him and the girlfriend of one of Tyler’s friends. As time goes on, the situation only leaves Tyler alone and hurt and throughout the album, we see Tyler switching his mentality between being heartbroken and flaunting his success and money. Even when he does acknowledge how he has achieved his goals and essentially has everything that he wants in life, it irks him that this woman is the one thing that he cannot have. This eventually drives him to distance himself as far as he can from the situation and travel the world, specifically Europe, to find other things in life to focus on and find happiness in. This situation is what brings us to the overall sound and content of “CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST”.
In my opinion, this is Tyler’s most mature album yet. In his past albums, he’s dealt with heartbreak and rejection in outbursts of anger and violence but here he is able to acknowledge the problematic nature of this forbidden love and even tries to properly reconcile the relationship between the two friends. Furthermore on the song “MANIFESTO”, Tyler and Domo Genesis speak on Black unity and power in a way and tone that I haven’t heard from them before. Given the amount of attention Black Lives Matter received in the year 2020, that song was a great and important message to give to his now global fanbase.
To conclude my opinion on this album, “CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST” is easily one of my favorite albums of this year and potentially holds the spot for my favorite Tyler The Creator album ever. Thanks for reading and watching!
