Presentation by Adjunct Professor Christine Charles from D4G at Discovery Day 2022.
Introduction by Dr Carmen Krapf, Geological Survey of South Australia. Finding an economic resource is a huge technical challenge in itself. Creating the conditions to optimise the likelihood of successful development starts from the first time an explorer contacts landowners and local communities. How to understand the environment we work in, to build effective relationships and trust, is a task that continues from the point of exploration through development, operations and into closure. The success of process through which explorers, miners, regulators and investors understand and manage the environment they find themselves in, is sometimes referred to as Social Licence to Operate. Christine addresses why Social Licence matters, who is responsible, how to go about it, and measuring performance. As guests here on Kaurna land, the Department for Energy and Mining (DEM) acknowledges everything this department does impacts on Aboriginal country, the sea, the sky, its people, and the spiritual and cultural connections which have existed since the first sunrise. Our responsibility is to share our collective knowledge, recognise a difficult history, respect the relationships made over time, and create a stronger future. We are ready to walk, learn and work together. |
