In the early 2000s, Shoaib Mansoor directed a very popular variant of this song called "Supreme Ishq" which was sung by Riaz Ali Qadri.

The story behind Baba Bulleh Shahs “Tere Ishq Nachaya, Karke Thaiya Thaiya”

This Punjabi Sufi song was composed by 18th-century mystic poet Baba Bulle Shah.
Bulleh Shah was a Noble Syed (descendant of the Prophet Muhammad), while his Mentor Shah Anayat was Arayein, a cast associated with agriculture and considered not as noble in those days.

Bulleh Shah's family got offended by his love and respect for Shah Anayat. Hence, they sent a group of respected elder sisters and sisters-in-law to convince him. Bulleh Shah wrote a beautiful poem on this:

“Bulleh no Samjhavan Aiyan, Pehnaan te Parajayan”
Manle Bulleya saada kehnaa, chud de palla Raiyan”

Translation:
Bulleh Shah’s sisters and sister-in-law come to persuade him
Bulleh, listen to our advice, and forbid the company of Arain (Shah Anayat)!”

When Shah Anayat heard about this event, he thought of leaving Bulleh to avoid him facing more hardship from his family.

But how could Bulleh, a humanist, leave his beloved Spiritual Guide and Peer because he was Arayein? Bulleh followed Shah Anayat and in an attempt to cheer him started dancing publically with his most famous poem.

Bullah Shah Naounda Mainu Inayat De Boohe
Jis ne mainu Poowaye Chole Waawe te Suhe
Jaan main maadi aye, Uddi mill Pya hai Piya”

Bulleh Shah is sitting at Shah Inayat’s door front!
He (Anayat) has clothed me in green and red attire (of Saints)
And as I yearned hard, he seized & saved me!
