Why is William, the Conqueror? |
|
When you look at the history of Kings and Queens, since William - none have invaded England quite like William. He was a foreigner, he engaged in battle against the current King, and upon conquering the Kingdom, proceeded to rule from afar, change aspects of the English society, and make an inventory of everything he just got his hands on.
A conqueror is defined as one who conquers: one who wins a country in war, subdues or subjugates a people, or overcomes an adversary. William does suit this nickname very well, and was the last major conqueror this Kingdom has seen, perhaps why he has kept the nickname after all these centuries. But should he be glorified for this as the First Official English King or...its first successful invader?
