One of the most common questions that I am asked by patients is: What happens to my kneecap when I have a total knee?

Here I will show you what actually happens during the surgery. The knee cap, or patella, can be left alone. Some surgeons may do this because the cartilage is still normal or the bone is too thin for a replacement part. When the patella is resurfaced only a small portion is removed. The majority of the kneecap is left because that is what your tendons/ligaments attach to which allows you knee to function. The backside of the kneecap can be resurfaced with a plastic button.
