Elizabeth Kloepfer met the American serial killer Ted Bundy when she worked as a receptionist at the University of Washington. She was 24, he was two years younger, and they spent seven years in a relationship together. Her daughter Molly was three when she was introduced to Bundy, and she came to view him as a father figure. The three of them would go camping and sailing together. In the photograph it is chilling to see Bundy playing with Molly and her friends in the Seattle sunshine when we consider what he liked to do to young girls. His own childhood was traumatic. He believed that his mother was his sister, and he was told that his grandparents were his parents. His grandfather was said to be a bigot and a bully who abused animals and battered his wife. Bundy was described as handsome, intelligent, and charismatic, a real charmer. But beneath the surface he was a sadistic sociopath who kidnapped, raped, murdered and dismembered at least 30 women and girls over a period of just four years, in seven states. The youngest being just 12. The true number of his victims remains unknown.
