Hip-Hop and Spoken Word Therapy: Ian Levy at TEDxTeachersCollege

video thumbnail
In this remarkable talk, Ian Levy demonstrates that self-acceptance, expression and intelligence can manifest in the form of great talent. Reflecting on his own experience feeling disaffected by education, Levy recounts the discovery of the power of being present. Through self-expression in any chosen form of writing, Levy believes one can develop a more profound appreciation of the self. Levy applies this practice while working with urban youth to provide a culturally acceptable platform in the form of hip-hop poetry as a means of lessening emotional vulnerabilities to ultimately support self-expression and communication.

Ian Levy is a hip-hop artist, counselor, and educator. He is current student of Teachers College, Columbia University pursuing a M.Ed in Psychological Counseling with a dual specialization in School and Mental Health Counseling.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
