2. SOUNDBITE (German) Annalena Baerbock, German Foreign Minister:
"Dear Nikos, I know that there are serious concerns with regard to your neighbour Turkey, we have also talked about that for a long time, also about the question of submarines. And I listened very carefully to what your concerns are, because times are different today than they were 15 years ago."

3. SOUNDBITE (German) Annalena Baerbock, German Foreign Minister:
"For me, it is clear that we must solve conflicts between NATO partners in dialogue. Disputes in the ranks of the alliance are exactly what the Russian president wants, so that will be my message in Istanbul this afternoon as well. That includes respecting each other's sovereignty -- and if we are defending international law at the moment, that of course means allies doing so mutually."

4. SOUNDBITE (German) Annalena Baerbock, German Foreign Minister:
"Yes, many questions of international law are complicated, but some are also very simple. Greek islands --Lesbos, Chios, Rhodes and many, many others -- are Greek territory, and no one has the right to raise questions over that. We need unity, we need dialogue, and we need in these difficult times calm level-headed action, as you as a government are showing at present."

5. SOUNDBITE (German) Annalena Baerbock, German Foreign Minister:
"We need unity, we need dialogue. And we therefore need prudent action in these difficult times, as you are currently displaying as a government. My government, too, will therefore leave no doubt that we stand in solidarity at Greece's side, in solidarity in and for our European family."

STORYLINE:
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock was meeting Friday with officials in Greece and Turkey. Baerbock criticized Ankara for disputing the sovereignty of Greek islands near its coastline.
"Yes, many questions of international law are complicated, but some are also very simple. Greek islands ‒ Lesbos, Chios, Rhodes and many, many others ‒ are Greek territory, and no one has the right to raise questions over that," Baerbock told reporters after talks in Athens with Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias.
NATO members Greece and Turkey have been at odds for decades over sea boundaries, related drilling rights and the war-divided island of Cyprus, disputes that have brought the two neighbors to the brink of war on several occasions.
Turkish officials says the sovereignty of eastern Greek islands can be disputed if it keeps a military presence there in violation of its treaty commitments. Athens disputes that view and has accused Turkey of carrying out frequent military overflights at its islands in the eastern Aegean Sea.
