Bossa Nova Guitar Lesson #17: Advanced Bossa Nova Phrase 3233

This is loosely based on two recordings made by Jobim, the version released on album The Wonderful World Of Antonio Carlos Jobim in 1965 and on Jobim's duet with Frank Sinatra recorded in 1969. This video also includes subtitles.

The video shows the usage of advanced bossa nova phrase 3233 in song intro and transitions. This phrase and it's variations (3332 and 3333) were also used often by João Gilberto. Examples of their usage can be found in Só Danço Samba, Samba da Minha Terra and Prá Machucar Meu Coração video lessons on this site.

It is always a challenge to transcribe for guitar a song that was originally recorded with orchestral arrangement. In those cases, the chords played on guitar need to be extended to include the notes played by the other instruments, e.g. E - Em7 played originally by Jobim were extended with major second and became E9 - Em9 (at 2:12 and 2:19). Likewise the rhythmic phrases were also adjusted. The syncopation of basic bossa nova phrase was selected to complement the melody as it was sung by Jobim. If you intend to sing the melody on different beats it would make sense to revise the syncopation of the phrases.

Few things to note about guitar accompaniment:

1. In this phrase the bass and all dotted 8th notes are played with staccato while all the 16th notes are played with legato. Both bass and chords are played simultaneously on all main beats except beat 5, in a similar way the phrase 1332 was played in Garota de Ipanema lesson. As usual with staccato playing, pay special attention to muting of the strings.

2. The chord change from Bm7 to Cmaj7/-5 (xx4557) may be difficult to perform due to the stretch between ring and little finger. In such a case it makes sense to fret first 3 fingers first to establish a firm reference point and add little finger fraction of a second later. As this change is played with staccato there is just enough time to perform this kind of chord change.

3. For the closing Bm7 all 5 fingers of the right hand are used.
