Design is human intention and forms the basis for how people evolve and coexist in the world. Most of us live in a designed world. Yet large populations are denied design as design thinking, research, and making processes are not introduced in K12 education.
Design as Nature presents an eLearning eco web that introduces what design is, what design does, and why design is important. It offers informal and life long learning activities across nine connected scales - nano, pattern, object, space, architecture, neighborhood, urban, region, world. TOOLS, LANGUAGES, DISCOVERY AND DESIGN journeys integrate transdisciplinary activities on the computer, outside on school campuses, and in school communities linked with virtual field trips, museums, institutions, online inter actives and contemporary global practices. An gallery shares ideas scaffolding improvement in relationships between the built and natural worlds. This eLearning 'DESIGNopedia', created by principals, teachers, architects, artists and college art, art education, design and architecture students (MIT, Harvard, NYIT, CCAC, Parsons, SAIC, UWM), offers online access to design thinking, research, process and making. It introduces culture, society, technology and the environment as drivers of innovation to design denied populations in remote locations. It supports imagination of teachers, students and communities with wonder of the built and natural world motivating learning, work, exploration, experimentation, with play and fun. Participants move from the computer into the community and learn about themselves, their neighbors, and their friends as they engage history and culture of place and explore sustainable design possibilities. Participants leave with access to a systems network for exploring, researching and conceptualizing new web supported place based projects aligned with Environmental Education, Art and Design, and Next Generation Science Standards, encouraging curiosity and putting creativity to work. Linda Keane, AIA, Professor of Arch & Env Design Mark and Linda Keane, AIA, NCARB, architects and partners in STUDIO1032 work on green initiatives along the Chicago-Milwaukee corridor. Leaders in design education, Linda is Professor of Architecture and Environmental Design at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she directed the City of Chicago Green Roof Website and chaired development of a third accredited Master of Architecture program in Chicago. Mark is Professor of Architecture University of Wisconsin Milwaukee where he developed the first online minor in architecture. The Keanes create animated films, lecture and publish about the Aesthetics of Sustainability and need for Eco literacy. Architecture An Interactive Introduction is the first CD ROM about the built environment created in the US. Their service learning work with college design students (SAIC’s Eco Design and UWM’s Green Milwaukee) connect design imagination with human ecology. The Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture, American Institute of Architects, Art Institute of Chicago, National Endowment for the Arts, National Environmental Education Foundation, A+DEN Architects and Design Educators Network, Association of Architecture Organizations, Public Broadcasting System, Graham Foundation, Wisconsin Arts Board, United States Green Building Council and the Union of International Architects recognize their creative contributions to design education.
