Being a parent in today's world can be really difficult with trying to keep up with the latest apps and games, so we are going to discuss a few tips and give you some tools that will help you protect your children from inappropriate content and online groomers.

Set Up Parental Controls On Your Broadband
Filter web browsers showing only pre-approved websites
Limit what your child can search for online.

Control or block video games your child can access by setting age parameters.

You can also manage the types of videos that your child can Search for.

You can find out how to set your parental controls on Internet matters.

1.Disable in-app purchasing so your child does not inadvertently run up large bills.

2.Set child-safe search engines that you can use such as swiggle.org.uk or kids-search.com

3. Set the "safety mode" on Youtube, Itunes and Google Play

4. Block Pop-ups to stop inappropriate content

As soon as your child has access to the internet, it would be best if you started having conversations about things they may encounter. Explain to them that they can always come and talk to you or one of their safe adults if: They find inappropriate images (or if you are talking to a young child, you could explain that sometimes there are pictures of people with no clothes on). If they come across anything on the internet that they don't understand or that upsets them. If someone they don't know tries to engage with them on social media or on a game if they encounter anything inappropriate, be calm and reassuring so they will continue to share with you when they have problems or questions. Visiting grandparents
Your broadband and devices may be protected, but when your children visit other homes they may not be. It may be wise to either ask your parents or family members to add the safety filters to their devices before letting your child use them.

Children at school
Speak to your child about what they may see on other children's phones at school and make sure that they know they can always come and talk to you about anything they have seen that may be offensive, or that they may not understand.

STREAMING CONTENT
Use the parental controls on sites like Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+, BBC iPlayer to make sure your child is not streaming inappropriate content. Apart from sexually explicit programmes on these channels, there are also many shows that have a high level of violence.

Online games

Many games have a multiplayer aspect or may even be based entirely online. These games allow your child to be vulnerable to abuse from other players. They may also be subjected to sexual advances. Make sure the programme is set to friends only (if available) or monitor their gameplay closely.

Exploring sites and apps with your child is a great way to find out about their interests and also an excellent way to find out if the apps they are using are safe and age-appropriate. These online activities may increase the possibility that a child could see inappropriate content.
Joining social networks before reaching the minimum age
Playing games and using apps which are not age-appropriate
Watching live streams which may show inappropriate content or taking part in them and unconsciously being exploited
