THis mindset can be derived from doing marcus aurelius stoicism exercises combined with listening or reading the best marcus aurelius quotes. I really enjoyed making this marcus aurelius biography - he was such an incredible man.

Marcus Annius Verus (121-180) was born into a well established family in Rome, Italy. While there is little that we know for certain about his childhood, it is clear that he enjoyed sport such as boxing, wrestling and hunting. While he was a serious man, no one expected or predicted that he would one day be the most powerful man of his time.

When Marcus was in his teens, the emperor Hadrian was on his death bed and he had no children. This meant that Hadrian had to pick someone to take the crown after he died. Hadrian first picked Lucius Ceionius, but after Lucius' unexpected death, Antoninus was chosen to be the successor

Antoninus was a senator who was also childless and he would have to adopt Marcus, as Hadrian requested, as well as Ceionius' son, Lucius Verus. This is how Marcus' name changed to Marcus Aurelius Antoninus.

After Hadrian died, it was obvious that Marcus was next in line to be the Emperor of Rome. In such a prestigious position, Marcus would pretty much be able to have anything that he wanted. Because of this, his education was of upmost importance; he had the privilege of being mentored bu Herodes Atticus, a rhetorician from Athens as well as Marcus Fronto whose letters with Marcus survive to this day. Also, Marcus also became an ambassador twice, receiving further valuable and practical education.

In 161 Antoninus died, ending one of the longest reigns Rome had ever seen. Marcus became the Emperor of the entire Roman Empire

In the beginning, Marcus co-ruled with his adopted brother, Lucius Verus, until he died eight years later.

Marcus' reign wasn't exactly a walk in the park: wars with the Parthian Empire, barbarian tribes attacking the empire, the rise of Christianity, a devastating plague that left thousands dead.

Because we live in a modern democracy, the power that Marcus really possessed is hard for us to believe. He could do whatever he wanted - nothing was off limits. He could indulge in the richest temptations whenever he wanted. What's even harder for us to believe is exactly how well Marcus handled this power.

The historian Edward Gibbon famously wrote that Marcus was the last of the "Five Good Emperors" and that "the Roman Empire was governed by absolute power, under the guidance of wisdom and virtue".

How did a man in such a position not succumb to his temptations when so many men in similar positions do? Stoicism gave him a framework for dealing with the large stresses a leader has to cope with. Learning lessons from literature, mentors and teachers Marcus embraced Stoicism and used it as a roadmap (much like you can if you so choose) to guide him to the good life.

Marcus only has one piece of substantial work, but I'll go out on a limb and say it is the most unique book ever made.

His Meditations is a guide to self discipline, personal ethics, humility, self actualisation and strength. It was a book written by the most powerful man to himself, and he had no intention of ever reading it. This gives the book a sense of rawness that few other books replicate. On top of that it is a miracle that we still have it today when so many similar writings have been lost in the 2,000 odd years since they were written.

If there is any book you should read it is Marcus' Meditations. It has benefitted thousands of people's life - just check the Amazon reviews.
