Just two months before the film is set to be released, we finally have a trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson‘s Phantom Thread starring Daniel Day-Lewis.Following four celebrated decades in the profession, the three-time Academy Award-winning actor announced his retirement earlier this year.Day-Lewis, who holds both English and Irish citizenship, previously won Best Actor in a Leading Role Oscars for My Left Foot (1989), There Will Be Blood (2007), and Lincoln (2012).He is the only actor in history to win this award three times, and one of only three male actors to win three Oscars.Set in the glamour of 1950s post-war London, Phantom Thread is about renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Day-Lewis) and his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville) who are at the center of British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, debutants and dames with the distinct style of The House of Woodcock.Women come and go through Woodcock’s life, providing the confirmed bachelor with inspiration and companionship, until he comes across a young, strong-willed woman, Alma (Vicky Krieps), who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover.Once controlled and planned, he finds his carefully tailored life disrupted by love.Anderson and Day-Lewis previously collaborated on There Will Be Blood. Anderson wrote, shot and directed Phantom Thread, and this is his first credit as cinematographer.The film looks striking, as do the costumes. It’s hard to imagine Day-Lewis won’t at least be nominated for another Oscar, and some nominations in technical categories are possible as well.From Universal and Annapurna Pictures, Phantom Thread opens December 25.
