Global National: Nov. 29, 2023 | US alleges India plot to kill Sikh activist in NY tied to BC murder

video thumbnail
On this episode: An agent of the Indian government directed one of its citizens to hire a hitman to assassinate a Sikh activist living in New York, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. That activist is believed to be Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, who has both Canadian and American citizenship. Jackson Proskow reports on how investigators say the suspected murder-for-hire plot was thwarted and the link to the June murder of Canadian Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia, as claims grow that the Indian government is trying to silence and kill vocal dissidents.

Turning to the Middle East, with the pause in Hamas and Israel's fighting in the Gaza Strip nearing its end, talks to extend that deal are coming down to the wire. Redmond Shannon reports on what both sides are saying and what the World Health Organization says the suspension has accomplished.

While Israel's military says it has detained 2,000 suspects in the West Bank as part of a counterterrorism operation against Hamas, many of those people are being held without charges. Daniele Hamamdjian looks at what some of the detainees say they've endured and one theory about why there appears to be a recent increase in the number of arrests.

After threatening to block online access to news link in Canada, Google has reached an agreement with the federal government over its Online News Act, which will see the tech giant pay $100 million annually to compensate news organizations. Mackenzie Gray looks at what it could mean for online news in the long term.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's popularity is plummeting, according to a new Ipsos poll conducted exclusively for Global News, with three in four respondents saying he should step down. David Akin explains why insiders say Trudeau doesn't want to quit right now.

As the deal between Israel and Hamas nears its conclusion, questions linger about how and when the violent conflict could end. Dawna Friesen speaks with Israeli journalist and author Gideon Levy about whether Israel can save all the hostages and also eliminate Hamas, and why he believes Jerusalem has "no endgame right now" towards peace.

Plus, she's known as the "mama of housekeeping" in Fredericton, N.B. Shelley Steeves introduces us to Nancy Pedersen, who's finally seeing her five decades of hard work recognized.
