Gift-Giving Taboos in Japan #Shorts

video thumbnail
If you want to bring a gift to a Japanese person, you may be concerned about the taboos of their culture. Among the various opinions, there are two taboos that are most often mentioned.

The first one is a comb. Whyyy?? You need to speak Japanese to understand this. Combs are called “くし Kushi” in Japanese. This is a homonym to “苦死 Kushi, " meaning to suffer and die.

The second one is tea. Tea would seem to be a perfect gift, as the Japanese love drinking tea. Tea is taboo because it is often chosen as a gift in return for Kōden. Kōden is money that is given to the family that lost someone, so tea as a gift is associated with someone’s death.

However, people who think strictly about gift-giving taboos are probably in my parent's generation (the 50s) or older. What’s most important is your your feelings and what the other person wants, so you don’t have to worry so much.
