Proposition bets, called props for short, are wagers on almost anything EXCEPT which team will win. Props include tons of different bets like which player will score the first goal or if a certain player will hit a home run. Props are offered for lots of major sports and they’re really popular in LIVE betting. That’s when you make bets on the fly as the game is playing out. One thing people love about props is that you can get super long odds and the chance at a really big payout. We’ll take a look at some of the most common props in a second but first, here’s a quick rundown of how props odds work. Prop Bet Odds When sportsbooks list props they always have odds attached to them that tell you how much a winning bet pays out. Depending on the sportsbook, props are listed using American odds, fractions or decimals. They’re all easy to understand and if you’re betting online, you can change the site’s settings do display all the odds in the style you like best. Let’s look at example prop bet using American Odds to show you exactly what we’re talking about: At the 2018 Super Bowl you could bet on what color Justin Timberlake’s shoes would be during the halftime show. That bet was posted with different color choices and each one had different odds. White was listed at -120 and Black was at +200. When you see a minus sign next to the number it means that you have to bet that much to win $100 in profit. In this example you’d have to bet $120 to win $100 in profit. When you see a plus sign next to the number it means that’s how much PROFIT you’ll win for every $100 you bet. In this case a $100 on black wins you $200 in profit. The great thing with betting online is that you can usually just type in how much you want to bet and the site will tell you what the payout’s going to be. Another way you’ll see prop bet odds posted is using what’s called fractional odds. Using the same example, you might see the bet on Justin Timberlake wearing black shoes listed as 2/1. That means you win $2 in profit for every $1 you bet. It’s the exact same as +200. If the odds seem confusing at first, don’t worry. With a little practice it’ll become second nature. Kinds of Prop Bets Prop bets are set by the sportsbook so the kinds of bets you can make depend on what site you’re betting with. That said, a lot of sites carry lots of the same standard props for most major sports: ● Futures are a kind of prop bet where you bet on future long-term outcomes like which team will win this year’s championship or which player will be named MVP. Futures usually offer huge odds and potentially huge payouts. ● Player props are offered in lots of sports and like whether a certain player will score in a particular game or how many times. There are also sport-specific props that let you bet on things like rushing, passing or running yards in the NFL. ● Exotics are creative props that let you bet on non-sports outcomes, just like the Justin Timberlake shoe bet we mentioned earlier. ● Live prop bets are wagers you can make on the fly during the game. You can bet on things like which player will score the next goal or which team will be ahead at halftime. ● Super Bowl prop bets are in a league all their their own. No other event even comes close to offering the variety of props you can find for the Super Bowl.
