STORYLINE:
Newspapers in Nairobi on Thursday morning reported that Kenya's opposition party has called off plans for a day of protests under pressure from former United Nations chief Kofi Annan.
Annan is in the country to try to mediate in the recent dispute over who won the country's recent presidential election.
On Thursday the he is set to meet Kenya's president Mwai Kibaki, official says
Last week police have banned all rallies, and at least 24 people died in three days of protests last week.
On Wednesday, dozens of protesters set fire to a government office building, forcing workers to crawl out windows as Annan tried to resolve the dispute over Kenya's presidential election.
The melee started after police fired tear gas at stone-throwing youths during a memorial service organised by the opposition to honour those killed in Kenya's post-election violence.
Some 685 people have been killed in riots and ethnic fighting since the December 27 vote.
The election returned President Mwai Kibaki to power for another five-year term, but the opposition and international observers say the vote tally was rigged.
Kofi Annan is the latest international figure to try to intervene in the standoff.
The chairman of the African Union, Ghanaian President John Kufuor, failed even to persuade Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga to agree to meet.
Both sides in the dispute have traded accusations of who is behind the violence, with the government and the opposition each saying they will take the other to the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands.
