|
Edward II is known for being one of England's worst Kings, as during his reign Civil War and poor governance blighted the country. He was a king who was known for having a number of favourites, and one of these Piers Gaveston it was rumoured was allegedly his lover. His obsession with a few of his favourites resulted in the Barons turning against him, and resulted in executions. However it was his own wife, the influential Isabella of France who turned against him eventually. She travelled to France to raise an army that invaded England and took control of many English cities. Because of this, Edward II was forced to abdicate the throne and it passed to his son Edward III.
He was imprisoned and held at Berkeley Castle, but within his prison cell he was killed and he would never make it out alive. The details regarding Edward II's murder and death remain debatable, and one theory is that an assassin in the middle of the night killed him with a red hot poker. There are other theories that he was held in such poor conditions that he caught a disease and died inside of his prison cell. One source even claims that the King somehow managed to escape and fled to Germany, and later met up with his own son under a different name and a disguise. The most common belief is that Isabella ordered her husband's murder, but the great thing about history is that you can make your own conclusions.
