Former Fiji Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama has been sentenced to a year in prison for perverting justice. He initially avoided jail but an appeal led to the high court upholding the sentence. Bainimarama, a former military chief, took power in a 2006 coup and won elections in 2014 and 2018. He was found guilty of trying to influence a police investigation into the University of South Pacific while he was prime minister.
