James Senior, Sr. User Experience Designer at Mayo Clinic, talks about topics that can enlighten our work. First, he analyzes what he calls a "distress interaction" ­ people looking up health information are under pressure and envisioning relief. How can we practice compassion as a design response to people in distress? Second, patients everywhere are engaged and empowered about their health. James describes a few ways to create a clear, demystified online user-environment, and illustrates how Mayo Clinic has created digital communities for patients to exchange stories of hope and reassurance.
