Can you get pregnant with thyroid problems? Is it safe to pregnant if you do?
The answer to both questions is YES but you should have some basic knowledge before you try to get pregnant especially if you have known or suspected thyroid problems. Thyroid hormone is required for ovulation which is necessary if you want to get pregnant. If you have low thyroid hormone (such as hypothyroidism or Hashimoto's) then you may not be ovulating (even if you have your cycle). This process can make conception very difficult or impossible. The good news is that once you address your thyroid function (either naturally or with medication) and optimize your free T3 and free T4, then getting pregnant is not very difficult. It is important to understand, though, that pregnancy does place an increased demand on your thyroid function. Early in pregnancy, you need to be able to produce thyroid hormone for yourself and for your baby. And the inability to produce enough thyroid hormone can lead to birth defects and decreased IQ in your baby. That's why, once you get pregnant, women who are already taking thyroid medication must double their dose. This isn't true for all medications, but it's a good rule of thumb to follow. If you are having trouble getting pregnant then you can look at your thyroid lab tests to determine how well your thyroid is actually working.
