Learn how to get the most out of training with beginners and how to beat them in tournaments with Martin from Schildwache Potsdam. Beginners in historical martial arts or swordplay are a great treasure for experienced practitioners, as they bring new ideas, concepts, and movements to test against. Beginners usually have two characteristics: they know little about the subject and are not practiced in the art, making them unpredictable. In training, use a constraint-based approach and set goals for techniques and concepts to practice. Also, try to be a perfect feedback machine to help beginners improve. In tournaments, use constraining actions, beats, over binds, and direct actions to feel them out and make them more predictable. Also, provoke them to directly attack you while they are still too far away to counter-strike them right after. Essentially: Improve your footwork and measure to beat beginners in tournaments.
