On June 21, 2006, First Class Sergeant Jared Christopher Monti led a team of 16 forward observers on a mission to gather information about enemy positions in a mountainous area of Afghanistan.

It was then that a force of over 50 Taliban fighters launched a violent attack, firing RPGs at the patrol.

Amidst the intense firefight, Sergeant Patrick Lybert was killed, and Sergeant Jared Monti called for artillery and close air support over the radio.

First Class Soldier Brian J. Bradbury was critically wounded and lay trapped between the enemy and the team's position.

Another sergeant from the team attempted to rescue him, but Sergeant Monti stopped him, saying that he would go get him.

He made two attempts but had to retreat due to the enemy's intense machine gun and RPG fire. On the third attempt, Sergeant Monti was hit by an RPG round that exploded, severing both his legs. He died shortly after.

At the same time, artillery and air support struck the enemy position, killing 22 Taliban fighters and causing the remaining ones to retreat.

His parents received the Medal of Honor on his behalf on September 17, 2009.
