Will Durant on War
Will Durant (November 5, 1885 – November 7, 1981) was an American writer, historian, and philosopher. He became best known for his work The Story of Civilization, 11 volumes written in collaboration with his wife, Ariel Durant, and published between 1935 and 1975. He was earlier noted for The Story of Philosophy (1926), described as "a groundbreaking work that helped to popularize philosophy". A great civilization is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself from within. The essential causes of Rome's decline lay in her people, her morals, her class struggle, her failing trade, her bureaucratic despotism, her stifling taxes, and her consuming wars. There have been only 268 of the past 3,421 years free of war. Science tells us how to heal and how to kill; it reduces our death rate in retail and then kills us wholesale in war, but only wisdom - desire coordinated in the light of all experience - can tell us when to heal and when to kill. The victors called the revolution a triumph of liberty, but now and then liberty in the slogans of the strong means freedom from restraint in the exploitation of the weak. War is one of the constants of history, and it has not diminished with civilization or democracy. #shorts #WillDurant #Thestoryofcivilization #Thestoryofphilosophy #Thelessonsofhistory #Gatesofwisdom Image Credits: By Will Durant Foundation - http://will-durant.com/bio.htm, Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=45199751 Important Disclaimer: Please note, this is only a reenactment of a past, historical personality using his/her image, words, speeches, and thoughts with the help of artificial voice and AI technology just as in any other theatrical performance for the sake of motivation and education and is in no way to be taken as an offense against the persons themselves. |
