Kalpana Chawla (born 17 March 1962 in Karnal, Haryana, India) was an Indian-born American astronaut and aerospace engineer who was the first woman of Indian origin to fly to space. She first flew on Space Shuttle Columbia in 1997 as a mission specialist.
Chawla's second flight was on STS-107, the final flight of Columbia, in 2003. She was one of the seven crew members who died in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster when the spacecraft disintegrated during its re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere on 1 February 2003.Chawla was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor,and several streets, universities, and institutions have been named in her honor.

How Kalpana Chawla & Team Died in Columbia Space Shuttle Crash ?

The Space Shuttle Columbia disaster occurred on February 1, 2003, during its re-entry into Earth's atmosphere. A piece of foam insulation had broken off from the shuttle's external tank during launch on January 16, 2003, and struck the left wing, damaging the thermal protection system. As Columbia re-entered, the breach in the wing grew larger, allowing hot gases to enter and causing the shuttle to break apart over Texas and Louisiana, resulting in the tragic loss of all seven astronauts on board. This incident highlighted safety concerns within NASA and led to a suspension of the Space Shuttle program for over two years.
