STORYLINE:

Turkey's prime minister became the first foreign leader to visit South Asia's quake zone on Friday, a day after the UN urged the world to do more to help the disaster's 3.3 (m) million homeless victims before the harsh Himalayan winter threatens their survival.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan travelled to Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistani-controlled Kashmir, with Pakistan's Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz.

After viewing the destruction from a helicopter, he visited a 50-bed field hospital set up by a Turkish relief agency, and met injured patients.

More than 300 have already been treated at the unit.

Erdogan has pledged 150 (m) million US dollars in aid, the biggest donation yet by one nation for Pakistan quake relief, an official said on Friday.

Turkey is giving a total of 150 (m) million US dollars in aid, 100 (m) million US dollars in financial assistance, and another 50 (m) million US dollars in relief goods, a spokesman for the Pakistani prime minister said.

Erdogan said he had made the visit "because we want to fulfil our duty to mankind, and also to our duty to our brothers".

Aziz said it is a very difficult time for Pakistan and Turkey's response has shown that the two countries have an "everlasting friendship".

"The people of Pakistan are very touched at the response of Turkey and I want to thank the Prime Minister personally and the people of Turkey for what they have done," he said.

The next biggest single donor so far is Saudi Arabia with 131 (m) million US dollars.

Meanwhile, helicopters continued to carry aid to remote villages and ferrying back the injured.

Soldiers were also moving by foot into the hills, carrying supplies on their backs.

Officials estimate that at least 79-thousand people died in the October 8 earthquake and 3.3 (m) million were left homeless.

The number of displaced persons is greater than in last December's tsunami which hit Indonesia and other Asian countries, and the mountainous region poses much bigger logistical challenges for authorities.
