Cooking with Selena Gomez - Recreating the Hawaiian Donuts on Selena + Chef with Roy Choi, genius?

video thumbnail
We love Selena Gomez and Roy Choi but let's be honest we love us some hot donuts. On Selena Gomez's new HBO Max series, Selena + Chef, she makes homemade Hawaiian Donuts, also called Malasadas or just Pillsbury Biscuit donuts with Chef Roy Choi. People have been making this type of homemade donuts for a long time but we've never thought to make them ourselves. Honestly, the long lines at the cider mills for donuts this Fall isn't appealing with our kid. So we're going to make this version and test them at home - thanks Selena and Roy! Join us as we deep fry some goodness! And don't forget this is a high carb, sugar and cinnamon treat so no diets here :)

QUICK TIPS WE LEARNED AFTER TEST:
1. If you don't have shortening, frying with vegetable oil worked too. The shortening did have an extra crunch, but it wasn't a big difference.
2. If you can't find the toasted sesame seeds, toast them yourselves in a pan on medium heat for a minute. You can also omit, we found it didn't really cling onto the donut like sugar and cinnamon.
3. The recipe doesn't give you the correct temperature, but frying them at 325 was perfect. The inside was cooked and outside crisped and browned to perfection. If too hot, the insides will still be raw while outside is browned. Trust us!
4. Don't drop directly into your cinnamon sugar, set aside for one minute then toss. If you don't the oil will drip into your sugar and make it clumpy. Plus it's too hot to handle.
5. Eat immediately while still warm. Once it cools down, the donut becomes dense. The crunch and the pillowy insides will be gone and that was the best part!
