Today we’re taking a look at how Carlo Ancelotti has turned Everton into Champions League contenders in Tactics Explained. Having been in charge of the Blues for less than a year, former Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, PSG, Juventus, AC Milan, Chelsea and Napoli manager, Carlo Ancelotti has got Everton flying as they sit top of the Premier League at the time of writing, but how has he done it?

Simply put, excellent tactics, a winning mentality and some fantastic new signings combined with a promising young squad has catapulted Everton up the Premier league. Tactically, the triple Champions League winner favoured a 4-4-2 last season but has changed his system to a 4-3-3 which bears a strong resemblance to Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool. There are major differences between the sides but there are also a number of similarities such as a hard working midfield three that facilitate their front 3, an aggressive high press that features the front 5 players and a considerable amount of creativity from full back. Considering Klopp has toppled Manchester City and their billions with a much smaller budget, it’s not a bad system to adapt.

What makes Everton so good this season is their front 3 of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison and James Rodriguez. Calvert-Lewin and James lead the Premier League in terms of Expected Goals (xG) and Expected Assists (xA) respectively, and the pair have been key to Everton’s evolution. Calvert-Lewin as a target to play to and a considerable threat in the box; and James as the side’s architect. Ancelotti’s ability to involve his most talented player from the start has been seriously impressive, and his relationships with Abdoulaye Doucoure and Seamus Coleman on the right, and Lucas Digne on the left have allowed the Colombian to thrive and operate wherever the space is.

As excellent as Everton have been so far this season it’s far too soon to be talking about a title challenge but as things stand, I’d say they’re nailed on to break into the Top 6 this season. But if they want to go further and consistently qualify for the Champions League then they’ll not only need to strengthen further but hold onto their stars like Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Lucas Digne and especially James Rodriguez. But in terms of strengthening I think they need a replacement goalkeeper for error prone Jordan Pickford, a long term right back to succeed Seamus Coleman and an aggressive all round midfielder to displace Andre Gomes.

Gettable targets include Borussia Monchengladbach’s Yann Sommer or Brighton’s Matt Ryan, RB Leipzig’s Lukas Klostermann and in central midfield, Aston Villa’s John McGinn or Fiorentina’s Gaetano Castrovilli. And if Everton are really serious, I’d be getting Ben Godfrey into the starting eleven in Yerry Mina’s place and if the former Norwich captain isn’t up to the task, then Brighton’s Ben White could be ideal.
