How can we spot Lung Cancer early? What are its early warning signs?

Lung Cancer is a very aggressive cancer, earlier you diagnose, better the patient will do. It is better to diagnose Lung Cancer before the first symptom appears. We need a high degree of suspicion when we have to diagnose. So we have to diagnose who might develop Lung Cancer. These are the people who are smoking for many years. So tobacco smoking is the key factor which leads to Lung Cancer. All the people who have been smoking for decades tend to develop Lung Cancer after they are 50 or 55 years of age. So any person who has a long history of smoking should undergo a high definition CT scan of lung once in a year. So that can be the first symptom of Lung Cancer before it appears. Apart from that there are other warning signs we should be looking for. That is any amount of blood that comes in the sputum, needs a thorough evaluation. Secondly any chest pain that is disappearing over a long time say 20 or 30 days, say 20 or 30 days, it is not going , then it needs a thorough evaluation with a chest x-ray, then the person becomes breathless because of lung tumor and especially when the tumor is very close to the center of the lung. This needs a thorough evaluation. There can be weight loss and much worse symptoms like headache when the Lung Cancer has spread to the brain. Lung Cancer can also cause loss of appetite. Anybody who has been smoking tobacco for decades are at a higher risk. Lung Cancer can also present with cough, chronic persistent cough that does not go with any form of treatment.

Symptoms of Lung Cancer. We can simplify it into thoracic symptoms that is where your chest is and non thoracic symptoms. Most of the times the symptoms can be like a common cold or cough. Cough is a very common symptom. If there is a cough for a long time. It can present with a dry cough. The non small cell carcinoma can present with a wet cough with sputum. Bronchogenic carcinomas can have blood in the symptoms such signs should not be missed tumors in the centre can cause compression and cause compressions of the veins. There can be change in the voice these are unusual symptoms. Apart from this you have other symptoms like breathless. Some patients can have fluid accumulation in year chest, tumors peripherally located can cause involvement of the chest wall or diaphragm. When during breathing can cause pricking form of pain, if it is nagging for a long time. Patients who are smoking for a long duration of long duration. If you are smoking 20 cigarettes per day for a duration of 1 year, then it is called 1 pack year. If you are smoking for a long duration and if it is more than 230 pack years then you are at more risk so people who are about 50 years and who are smoking for more than 30 years then you have to do Lung Cancer screening, but consult your doctor and take opinion. This Lung Cancer screening is a CT imaging is done. We do a low dose CT scan and it takes less than 1 minute. It is a very simple day care procedure. You have to do it only once a year. If there are any nodules then you have to do further investigation .
