The Data Science Ethos - Launch Webinar |

Data literacy and data science are increasingly important for STEM education. Guiding students toward responsible data principles and practice is essential, but incorporating ethics and societal impact can be challenging for STEM educators. Often, ethical considerations are an afterthought or are not adequately connected to the technical work of data science.
The interactive Data Science Ethos tool is a more true-to-life model for data science that shows how societal questions are a constitutive part of the day-to-day work of a data scientist. The Data Science Ethos provides a framework for teaching the data science research process that includes explicit societal contexts in the form of case studies. These case studies are provided by data science community members, often drawn from real world research experiences. At each stage of the research lifecycle, users are presented with ethical lenses through which to consider the research at-hand: Positionality, Power, Narratives, and Sociotechnical Systems. These lenses, when matched with case studies, provide a powerful and unprecedented fusion of ethics and the data science research process. |
