Lauterbrunnen nestles in one of the most impressive alpine valleys, between gigantic rock faces and high peaks. With its 72 roaring waterfalls as well as secluded valleys, flowery alpine meadows and secluded mountain hotels, the Lauterbrunnen Valley is one of Switzerland's most important nature reserves.
Lauter Brunnen - the name of the village alone evokes the uniqueness of this landscape. the Lauterbrunnen valley has 72 waterfalls. The most emblematic is the Staubbach waterfall, one of the highest waterfalls in Europe, which flows from a rock face nearly 300 meters high. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who visited the valley in 1779, found inspiration in these roaring waters to compose his famous poem Gesang der Geister über den Wassern. In the heart of the Schwarzer Mönch mountain, hidden behind impressive rock faces, the Trümmelbach waterfall offers an equally magnificent natural spectacle. Nearly 20,000 liters of water per second rush down ten glacial waterfalls totaling about 200 meters in height. You can only attend this show in summer, by taking a tunnel elevator. Winter The extensive ski areas of Wengen-Petite Scheidegg and Mürren-Schilthorn can be reached quickly by means of the ski lifts. Across the Jungfrau region, 45 transport facilities, 213 km of slopes, fun parks, 100 km of winter hiking trails and 50 km of toboggan runs await winter sports enthusiasts. The Lauterbrunnen valley has many cross-country ski trails. Summer The village of Lauterbrunnen (795m) is the starting point for the most famous tourist destinations in the Jungfrau region. A cog railway connects Lauterbrunnen to the sunny terrace of Wengen on the eastern side of the Lauterbrunnen valley and Kleine Scheidegg, where you change trains to climb the Jungfraujoch. On the opposite slope is Mürren, a holiday resort, accessible from Lauterbrunnen or Stechelberg. Departing from Stechelberg, the cable car takes you to the top of the Schilthorn, at an altitude of 2971m, famous for having served as the setting for the filming of a classic from the James Bond 007 series On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
