Spider-Man Freshman year is going to finally team up Spider-Ma and Daredevil within the multiverse of the MCU. But what role will Matt Murdock play in the Peter Parker's life? Charlie Cox starred as Matt Murdock in the Netflix shows Daredevil and The Defenders, and is set to reprise the role in multiple MCU titles, including a new Daredevil series called Born Again. The fact that he’s ALSO playing the role in Spider-Man: Freshman Year has a lot of implications both for the show’s story and its place in the multiverse.

Given the history of the two characters, and what we know about the Peter Parker of this new animated series, I’m betting Daredevil is GOING TO TRAIN Peter–teach him HOW to deal with his new superpowers and become a local crimefighter, long before his days as an Avenger.

SOMEBODY has to teach Peter how to throw a punch and swing a web, and there’s all sorts of reasons why that somebody is the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen–Matt Murdock. In this video, we’re going to explain why Matt will be the one training Peter in Freshman Year, how Tom Holland’s Spidey and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin are on an epic collision course, and how Daredevil is going to be Peter’s closest ally after the events of No Way Home.

I’m also going to show how this guy, this dude, and my man here, are all the SAME Daredevil–and the one we’re going to see again in Spider-Man: Freshman Year.

Before we get into that, let’s talk a little about Freshman Year and what Marvel’s told us so far. First off, the show is animated, and going to feature a cel-shaded style heavily inspired by the original Amazing Spider-Man comics of the 1960s.

Secondly, it’s going to focus on Peter’s first year as Spider-Man, his freshman year of high school, which notably takes place BEFORE we meet Tom Holland’s Peter in the MCU. That first appearance was in Captain America: Civil War, when Tony Stark personally recruits him to help fight Cap in Germany. By that point in MCU Peter’s history, he’d already been bitten by a radioactive spider, built his web-shooters, and mastered the basics of his powers.

Spider-Man: Freshman Year was recently revealed to be a variant timeline and NOT Earth-616, however one that nearly matches the events in the MCU up until a very specific divergence:

According to Marvel Studios producer Brad Winderbaum, Freshman Year “follows the pattern that you see in Civil War. Down to Peter getting the broken Blu-ray player from the trash and he walks into his apartment for the famous moment where Tony Stark is waiting for him… But because of things that happen in the multiverse because of new, random occurrences, it’s not Tony Stark who’s waiting for him there. It’s Norman Osborn, and that sends his life in an unexpected trajectory that collides him with many unexpected characters in the Marvel Universe.”

Those unexpected characters include several Spider-Man villains we haven’t seen much of (if at all) in the MCU, like Tarantula, Chameleon, Scorpion, Unicorn, Speed Demon, Rhino, and Doc Ock. Other characters we haven’t seen alongside Tom Holland will also appear in the series like Lonnie Lincoln, Harry Osborn, Amadeus Cho, and Nico Minuro of the Runaways.

Not only are we going to see a much larger roster of Spidey’s rogue’s gallery than ever before, we’re going to see them in their more flamboyant traditional costumes, meaning this timeline is going to be a lot flashier and at least a little less grounded than the MCU.

Besides being more action-oriented and dealing with more Spider-Man mythology from the comics, Freshman Year is obviously going to give us more of an origin story for Peter–since it’s still his very early days as a webslinger. Skipping his MCU origin story made a lot of sense for Kevin Feige–Amazing Spider-Man 2 had only come out two years before Civil War, and we’d already seen Spider-Man’s origin story on the big screen twice in ten years.

But after a trilogy of films starring Tom Holland’s Peter, as well as Civil War and two Avengers films, a lot of fans ARE wondering what Peter was up to before he met Tony. When and where was he bitten by a radioactive spider? Did he have an Uncle Ben, and was he responsible for his death?
