This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Test malaria without injections in less than 30 seconds

Brian Gitta served as Team Leader and developer for Matibabu in Uganda from February 2013 to-date.

Prior to this he was and still finishing a Bachelor’s degree in computer science at Makerere University Uganda,

Brian is the brain child of the idea of using technology app to detect malaria and thus avoids the current method of pricking to get blood that is then tested for malaria. He got a team together with Joshua Businge a fellow computer science student and mentors who had already helped with other innovations at the university that is Josiah kavuma and Simon Lubambo, who are skilled in engineering hardware and IT.

The team then called their innovation and team Matibabu, a Swahili word that means medical center.

Brian and the team went ahead and designed a prototype that is plug into a smartphone and the uses light to detect Malaria. Results are available in seconds and the smartphone can email them and map them for epidemiological purposes.

Matibabu is now in the process of partnering with other companies and individuals to make the innovation more accessible to everyone and mainly children and pregnant women who are most affected by malaria.
