If War Thunder's M22 Locust Was Historically Accurate |
|
In 1941, the United States Army began looking at the concept of airborne tank units. None of their current tanks would be suitable for the job, so an entirely new vehicle would have to be created. The United Kingdom also expressed interest in this concept, offering their Hamilcar gliders for testing. The prototype vehicle, originally designated T9 and then T9E1, was actually quite troubled for a light tank. Mechanical and ergonomic issues were plentiful. It wasn't until late 1943 that these issues were finally sorted out, but the M22 Locust still barely met reliability requirements. The M22 did eventually see combat, but only with British units.
