Social Networking And The Changing Self | Rebecca McGuire-Snieckus | TEDxVilnius |
|
Self as a noun did not appear in the English language until the 13-and 1400s, with negative connotations derived from a long tradition of seeing the individual mainly as a sinner.
From the Ancient times to nowadays when everything in interfered with the Internet, the concept of "self" changed immensely. Starting 2000s more and more new words were added to the English dictionary: Internet, webcam, mobile phone, social media, troll, LOL, OMG, sexting, tweet, selfie, FOMO, FOBO, defriend among many other. A Chartered Psychologist (CPsychol) with the British Psychological Society, Dr Rebecca McGuire-Snieckus is a Senior Lecturer and is the Undergraduate Programme Leader in Psychology at Bath Spa University.
