Hyaluronic acid gel injections for knee arthritis pain have been done for decades now. They started out as “rooster comb” injections as they were originally made from the red spiky things on the head of roosters and hens. Now they’re synthetically developed in a pharmaceutical lab.

This is offered by some doctors as an option for relief from knee arthritis pain. Not all doctors offer this because the research on viscosupplementation (another name for hyaluronic acid gel injections) is not concrete at being consistently effective. Insurance sometimes covers this injection option, but sometimes patients have to pay out of pocket.
