Tim Mosso Reviews His Omega Seamaster Plus Rolex vs Omega Watches |
|
The Omega Seamaster is the eternal rival of the Rolex Submariner. In fact, Tim originally hoped he would be able to buy a Submariner before deciding that the Seamaster was both a better buy and a better watch. Tonight, Tim gives a comprehensive review of his Omega Seamaster and pits Rolex against Omega in a broad range or luxury watch categories.
Tim's Omega Seamaster is the well-known "James Bond" Seamaster reference 2531.80.00. At 41.5mm in stainless steel but only 11.8mm thick, the 1990s Seamaster Diver 300M is an elegant companion. This watch rose to fame as the featured watch during the Pierce Brosnan James Bond series of 1995-2002. Unlike previous generations of the Omega Seamaster, this 300-meter chronometer replaced Rolex on the wrist of Agent 007. Omega's 1993 redesign of the Seamaster yielded a rugged watch packed with features. With a 300-meter diving depth, a helium escape valve, a deployant clasp with diving extension, and a COSC certified Omega movement, the Diver 300M was the most capable Seamaster Professional since the PloProf and Seamaster 1000M of the 1970s. Moreover, this was the first Omega Seamaster to offer a serious threat to the Rolex Submariner of the same time period. The Rolex Submariner 16610 was launched in 1988 and changed little throughout the 1990s. While a legend even then, the Sub often failed to measure up to its reputation. Its greatest weakness was a Rolex Oyster bracelet and clasp that were showing their age. The old hollow center and hollow end link Oyster designs felt delicate, loose, and even cheap to the touch. Rolex's clasp was formed from a stamped piece of thin-gauge steel. The 1990s Omega Seamaster Diver 300 Meter bracelet was composed entirely of solid links. Its clasp was formed from thick-gauge steel and released by triggers. Omega's fold-out dive extension was a rugged and crisply machined as the other parts of the assembly. Rolex didn't offer a clearly superior option until 2008 with the white gold Submariner "Smurf" and the steel versions that followed it.
