NEW OPEL ASTRA SPORTS TOURER 2023 With its sleek and chic styling, the new 6th generation Opel Astra Sports Tourer is a great alternative to SUVs, especially since it offers a good amount of cargo space in a compact sedan size. The station wagon and Opel have a long history that goes back more than six decades. It all started with the famous Kadett, later renamed Astra in 1991, the latest of which is the 6th generation, also known as the L-type. First launched as a compact sedan last year, the Astra 6 is now available as a Sports Tourer wagon with 180 hp internal combustion and plug-in hybrid engines. This sleek station wagon shows that this type of bodywork is still popular, and not only for the practicality of its boot, which allows you to go shopping on a Saturday at Ikea. Since its takeover by PSA (now Stellantis), Opel has been using the group's technical elements and it's no secret that the new Astra 6 shares its technical base (platform and engines) with the latest Peugeot 308. The Astra Sports Tourer's more Germanic styling differs from the lioness 308 SW in the more traditional and perfect driving position, especially with its ergonomic seat, which is certified by AGR, a German organization that promotes back health while driving. The cabin layout is flattering and above all extremely uncluttered with a black lacquered dashboard that houses two 10-inch screens, one for driving information and the other in the centre, but facing the driver, for the infotainment system. Fortunately, Opel has retained some real piano keys for quicker access to the air conditioning/heating controls or the main menu. While the layout is identical to the Astra sedan, it is in the rear that the Sports Tourer stands out with its perfectly square trunk, and therefore ultra practical for loading with its appreciable volume of 516 litres in this hybrid-rechargeable version that cuts a few litres by the presence of the battery under the floor. Behind the wheel is the Opel feel of a long-distance station wagon that is dynamic on a small road despite weighing over 1,700 kg. Comfort is good despite the harshness of the German-style damping. The hybrid-rechargeable engine offers the contribution of the electric motor a real dynamism with frank accelerations. Once in the city, the electric motor ensures quiet travel in 100% electric mode. Powered by a 12.4 kWh battery, the 81 kW (110 hp) electric motor provides an all-electric range of around 60 km according to the WLTP standard, or 45-50 km in real life as in our test drive. |
