Opel has lifted off the covers from its latest offering in the station wagon space, the Astra Sports Tourer. Based on the Astra hatchback, the new Opel Astra Sports Tourer shares its platform and other mechanical underpinnings with the Peugeot 308 SW. It should be noted that Peugeot unveiled the 308 SW, which is a station wagon version of the 308 hatchback, which itself shares its mechanicals with the Opel Astra hatchback.

the Opel Astra Sports Tourer shares much of its design with its hatchback counterpart. The entire front fascia has been lifted off from the hatchback, which is called ‘Vizor’ in Opel’s new design terminology. The front face has a wide blacked-out front grille, which, unlike the hatchback, gets chrome surrounds and chrome finished logo of Opel in the middle. The grille is flanked with bi-beam Matrix LED projector headlamps and daytime running headlamps on their upper edges. The vertical V-shaped housings for the fog lamps get a strip of chrome garnish on their outer edges.

For the new Sports Tourer, Opel has stretched the wheelbase of the Astra, and thus, the vehicle gets a long profile when viewed from the sides. On offer are new bigger side windows, chrome finish for the shoulder line and new machined alloy wheels, At the back, the rear profile of the Opel Astra Sports Tourer looks different from the Astra hatchback – while both the cars share the same slim LED tail lamps, the license plate housing has moved up in the Sports Tourer.

Opening the door to the Astra Sports Tourer reveals an interior that is as modern looking as you’ll find in any new car on sale today. Leading that is what Opel calls its Pure Panel, which is a dashboard consisting of two 10-inch colour displays that appear to form one piece. Not only does it look good, but it also runs a modern infotainment system powered by Snapdragon and features wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, so it’s right up to date on the tech front.

We also like that Opel retains physical buttons for climate control, window clearing and other essential functions. Cars equipped with an automatic gearbox gain more space on the centre console where the traditional drive selector is replaced by an inset rocker switch - though we’re not so keen on the piano black surface on the centre console, as it’s a magnet for fingerprints and it scratches easily.

Boot space is a crossover-beating 597 litres, and can expand up to 1,634 litres when the rear seats are folded. If you opt for the incoming plug-in hybrid model that boot volume does decrease slightly to 516 litres due to the placement of the hybrid battery.

For the Astra Sports Tourer, Opel has relied on the same set of engines and transmissions which are on offer for the Astra hatchback. The range starts with a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which makes 110 bhp of power and 205 Nm of torque. The engine is available in a higher state of tune as well, with maximum power and torque outputs rated at 130 bhp and 230 Nm respectively.

For those who prefer oil burners, there is a 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel engine too, which makes 130 bhp of power and 300 Nm of torque. The range tops with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, which is a combination of a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine with an electric motor that makes 180 bhp of power and 360 Nm of torque. A 6-speed manual gearbox is offered as standard, with higher variants getting an option of an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

Prices for the Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer estate start at £25,005 for the entry-level 110PS 1.2-litre petrol, while the 130PS 1.5-litre diesel is available from £26,605. The 180PS 1.6 Plug-In Hybrid-e is priced from £33,400.
