Born and raised in Singapore, Liyi Chen has always been interested in politics and society. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Hong Kong with double majors in Journalism and Economics. Instead of pursuing a career in journalism, she worked as a financial auditor in Hong Kong. This work gave her the opportunity to visit and learn about the booming industrial towns of China. She subsequently returned to her native country, where her employment with the Singapore Economic Board inspired her to start her own social enterprise, Indie Mamashop. Her proactive endeavours instilled in her increasing determination to contribute to society.
At the end of 2016, Liyi decided to take a year off from work to concentrate full-time on developing Indie Mamashop and also to embark on new community-related initiatives. In early 2017, she co-organised with her husband a series of dinner conversations in Singapore entitled “More Than Just” to promote social understanding on a perennially difficult topic: race and racism.
