Dear Friends,
while we are all bond to stay in our home equally in witch part of this small world we are, I like to share with you the last concert which I played just a few days before the lockdown put India to an so far unknown silence. It was a worthy final concert for this Indian concert season and an honor to pay our tribute while celebrating 98th years of Padma Vibhushan Ustad Ali Akbar Khan at the Aashish Khan School of World Music. Even it might be not visible at first sight, there is a connection of the Maihar Rampur Senia Binkar Gharana and the Jaipur Binkar Gharana represented by my Guruji Ustad Asad Ali Khan. His father and Guru Ustad Sadiq Ali Khan spend half his life as a musician at the court of Rampur. The same place where Baba Allaudin Kahnsahib the father of the Maihar Gharana got talim under Ustad Wazir Kahn the great Binkar of the Senia tradition. It is no surprise that with this background the music of Maihar Gharana is deeply grounded in the Dhrupad Ang and presents the Raga with detailed Alap, Jor and Jhala as developed in Veena in the former centuries. While we had first planned for a midnight night Raga, last minute changes inspired me to play Raga Jog. Enjoy the performance that concluded with two composition in Chautaal und Tivra Taal accompanied by young talented Mithun Chakraborty on the Pakhawaj and Mahasweta Acharjee on Tanpura. Thanks to Ustad Aashish Khan and Shiraz Ali Kahn for the invitation, organization and the video recording. Video courtesy AKSWM |
