Providing clean, safe drinking water in developing countries has the potential to save and improve countless lives. Often, science is not the barrier to achieving this. Physicist Kevin McGuigan discusses the social side to his work on solar disinfection.

The Solar Disinfection Research Group at Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland led by Kevin McGuigan develops new technologies to deactivate waterborne pathogens using real and simulated sunlight . He also coordinates several clean water programmes in developing countries.
