Weekly Walk: The Obelisk

video thumbnail
The 3,500-year-old Egyptian Obelisk (also known as Cleopatra's Needle) was installed in Central Park this week in 1881. Join us as we stroll around this iconic 220-ton monolith and discover how after being gifted to the United States, its transportation to New York took over a year, and was a significant feat of logistics, diplomacy, and engineering.

The mission of the Central Park Conservancy is to preserve and celebrate Central Park as a sanctuary from the pace and pressures of city life, enhancing the enjoyment and wellbeing of all.
