So I often get asked does working out too close to bedtime cause insomnia? And the answer is yes and no. If you are someone who is predisposed to having insomnia, then, yes, it can cause insomnia. The theory is that when you're working out you're increasing your body temperature which is normally supposed to be dropping closer to bedtime. And you're also stimulated. Your body releases endorphins when you're exercising, and it's really hard to come down from that high closer to bedtime. The whole sleep process begins hours before your actual bedtime. Now, if you're not someone who is prone to having insomnia, then exercising close to bedtime shouldn't be a problem at all. To those who do have a predisposition to insomnia, I suggest working out in the middle of the day or in the morning hours. And that will help you, in fact, sleep a little bit better at night by promoting deep sleep. So working out in the middle of the day or in the morning can also increase wear and tear of your body which produces a chemical called adenosine. This chemical is what increases deep sleep and helps sleep onset at night and is part of your sleep process during bedtime. So whether working out close to bedtime will cause insomnia or not really depends on different factors and the type of person that you are. What I suggest is if you do work out closer to bedtime and you're having trouble falling asleep, try working out in the middle of the day or in the morning and see if that helps improve your insomnia. |
