Video Transcript:

Betting point spreads and over-unders are great ways to gamble on the NFL and NBA but sometimes the numbers being offered by the sportsbooks aren’t very appealing.

That’s where teaser bets come in. By combining wagers in at least two games, sportsbooks will let you move the point spread or the point total in favor of the teams you want to bet on.

Sound too good to be true? Well there are a few strings attached and in this video we’re going to explain it all step by step. Let’s get started.

HOW DO TEASER BETS WORK?

Teaser bets are most commonly used for betting on the NFL and NBA and like we said before, they let you change point spreads and over/under lines in favor of the teams you want to bet on.

The trade-off is that you have to combine two games and win them both for your teaser bet to pay off.

You also have to pay a bigger commission to the sportsbook depending on how many points you want to move the spread or total.

Football teasers let you buy 6, 6.5 or 7 points while in basketball you can move the lines by 4, 4.5 or 5 points.

TEASER BET EXAMPLE

Let’s look at an example from the NFL so we can show you exactly how teasers work.

First, to make a teaser bet you have to combine bets on at least two games.

Let’s say you want to take the Cardinals and the Falcons to both cover the spread.

The original spreads are +17 for the Cardinals, meaning they can lose by up to 16 points and still cover the spread, and -6 for the falcons, which means they have to win by at least seven points.

If you take a six-point teaser on these games, the new point spreads will be +23 for the Cardinals and 0 for the Falcons.

Another part of teaser bets is that you get worse odds on your payout since moving the lines in your favor makes you more likely to win each game.

In our example you can see the payout for this two-game teaser is way worse than if you combined the two bets in a straight parlay.

MATH BEHIND TEASER BETS

Here’s a little teaser math for you.

To break even betting seven-point teasers in the NFL, you have to win each game roughly 75% of the time.

That’s because the sportsbook is charging you a premium for moving the line in your favor. The more points you want to tease, the bigger the premium.

In the NFL, the odds on a two-game teaser bet, are -120 for six-points, -130 for 6.5 points and -140 for seven points.

Since you’re accepting worse odds in exchange for better lines, it’s really important to only take teasers when shifting the line will result in you winning each game at least three quarters of the time.

TEASERS AND KEY NUMBERS

Key numbers are one of the most important concept to learn for spotting good teaser bets.

Key numbers are the most common margins of victory in each sport and they play a huge role in betting point spreads.

In football, the key numbers are three and seven since points are scored in those increments with field goals and touchdowns.

Key numbers aren’t quite as important in basketball but the biggest ones to look out for are two and seven.

Teaser bets work best when you’re able to shift the point spread across both these numbers.

Taking an underdog’s spread from +2 to +8, for example, is an ideal situation. With the original spread, even losing by one field goal would cause them to not cover the spread.

After teasing six points they can now lose by a touchdown and still cover the spread.

The same concept works in reverse. If you can take the favorite’s spread from -8 to -2, they only have to win by a field goal instead of a touchdown.
