Queen of Rock 'n' Roll Tina Turner passed away today at her home in Küsnacht, Switzerland, following a protracted illness. She was 69 years old. She was 83 years old.

"With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model," her U.K. spokesperson Bernard Doherty said in a statement.Turner got a kidney transplant in 2017 after being diagnosed with intestinal cancer in 2016.

Turner, whose birth name was Anna Mae Bullock and who was born on November 26, 1939 in Nutbush, Tennessee, rose to fame in the late 1960s as a member of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue. After leaving husband Ike Turner after years of physical and emotional abuse, she staged what remains one of the greatest comebacks in pop music history, scoring massive hits in the 1980s like "What's Love Got To Do With It", "Private Dancer", and "The Best," and earning an estimated 180 million album sales worldwide, 12 Grammy Awards, and sold-out stadium tours around the world.Both the 1993 blockbuster What's Love Got to Do with It and the upcoming 2019 Broadway musical Tina - The Tina Turner Musical tell the tale of her life.

Based on her 1986 autobiography I, Tina: My Life Story, the film What's Love Got to Do With It featured Oscar-nominated turns by Angela Bassett as Tina and Laurence Fishburne as Ike. Over $60 million was made through ticket sales around the world.

Tina Turner began her musical career in 1957 as a member of Ike Turner's Kings of Rhythm; she released her first recording as a solo artist with Ike Turner's help in 1960, a duet titled "A Fool in Love." It was the beginning of a succession of hits for the singer, including "It's Gonna Work Out Fine," "River Deep," "Nutbush City Limits," and especially "Proud Mary," which didn't always do well on the charts.

In 1976, Tina left Ike, and the Revue disbanded for reasons she would later explain in interviews and memoirs. She became a pioneering symbol of a person who had overcome domestic violence and raised awareness about the issue.

After her breakup with Ike, the singer found herself in dire straits financially until the release of her fifth solo album Private Dancer in May 1984 in the United States, months after the album's lead single "Let's Stay Together" had reached the Top 10 in the United Kingdom and No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The second single from the album to be released in the United States became Turner's most successful single to date. Her powerful performance on "What's Love Got to Do With It" helped the song spend three weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 (and reach No. 3 in the UK). To date, Turner has been nominated for 28 Grammys and has won nine (including one with Ike): Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Female Pop Vocal.

She had two additional Top 10 successes in the United States after "What's Love Got to Do With It" with "Better Be Good to Me" and "Private Dancer," which was written by Mark Knopfler and featured guitar work by Jeff Beck.

Although Prince's Purple Rain and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band's Born in the U.S.A. dominated the charts, the Private Dancer album was also a hit, spending 11 weeks at No. 3. Five times platinum means that 5 million or more copies of the album have been sold in the United States.

In 1985, Turner released "We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)," a hit song from the Mel Gibson and George Miller sequel Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. She gave a noteworthy performance as the vicious leader of Bartertown, saying, "Welcome to another edition of Thunderdome!" "One of the Living," another music from the soundtrack, peaked at No. 15.
