Wake up with watches and Tim Mosso; Wednesday morning is the new Friday afternoon for luxury watch buyers, watch collectors, and watch enthusiasts! Four Rolex watches and an impressive array of independent watch brands lead the way this morning, two complications from A Lange & Sohne, and an Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch completes the collection.

The Rolex Daytona stands coequal with the Patek Philippe Nautilus as the hottest luxury watch of our moment. That said, today’s yellow gold Daytona and its sunburst green dial represent a huge departure from the usual steel-ceramic Cosmograph sought by mainstream buyers. Two Rolex Explorer 2 models from different eras give Tim a chance to chart the changes in this core model over its last two generations. Finally, an unconventional Rolex Cellini Prince in Everosegold proves that finding hidden value in modern Rolex watches is just a matter of looking beyond steel sports watches.

Pilots watches fly high on today’s episode. The Omega Speedmaster “TinTin,” a Moonwatch inspired by the Belgian “Tintin” comics, is a rare modern Speedmaster Professional thanks to a short production run and a contentious relationship with the owners of the Tintin copyrights (this model never was “officially” approved as a co-branded product). The 600-piece 2017 Patek Philippe Calatrava Pilot New York limited edition is a rarity even by Patek Philippe standards; the no-date dial with center seconds is one of the few modern Patek watches thusly equipped. The Patek’s 42mm stainless steel is unusual both for its size – rare for a Patek Philippe Calatrava – and its use of steel rather than precious metal.

Independent watch brands have found favor among collectors thanks to unique creative visions, clever style statements, and lower production than mainstream watch brands. Francois-Paul Journe and his eponymous “Montres Journe” have crafted many of the defining luxury watches of our era, and today’s program features two. The F.P. Journe Repetition Souveraine is a stainless steel minute repeater of remarkably compact dimensions with a clear and powerful chiming caliber. F.P. Journe’s Vagabondge III is a world premier thanks to its first-ever constant jumping seconds display.

Maitres du Temps lacks the visibility of Montres Journe, but the Maitres du Temps Chapter 3 is a landmark watch in its own right. Created through an alliance of Kari Voutilainen and Andreas Strehler, the Chapter 3 in today’s episode has been customized with a hand-painted miniature Andy Warhol “Currency” tribute by master micro painter Andre Martinez.

Additional showcases of independent watchmaking include the H. Moser & Cie Endeavour Perpetual, which cloaks its perpetual calendar system under a deceptively simple dial. Laurent Ferrier’s Galet Montre Ecole Annual Calendar proves that you don’t need to buy a precious metal watch to enjoy the finest standards of Geneva watch finish; its fool proof annual calendar system proves that watch collectors need not tolerate cantankerous setting systems for complicated calendar watches.
