When you know examples of blame-shifting phrases then you can better prepare yourself for this manipulation tactic used by a narcissist. Blame shifting as a form of projection is a way in which the narcissist goes into self-preservation mode when they feel as if they are being attacked or will be found out. The narcissist, or person with narcissism traits, uses blame shifting to make the problem about you and not them. They have unstable senses of self and lack object constancy which means that they cannot appropriately deal with negative emotions in themselves. As a result, the blame shifting narcissist will make the problem about you so that they can avoid taking responsibility at all costs. Blame shifting and projection are two ways in which narcissists can avoid responsibility for their actions. When you know how to avoid blame shifting and how to handle blame shifting, you can feel in control in the interactions with the narcissist. Phrases in blame shifting are predictable if you know what to listen for. Narcissistic abuse is easy to get trapped in and the narcissist will use control and manipulation tactics of gaslighting, projection, and blame shifting phrases but you can take the control back!
