Able-bodied adults, work, and food assistance: What are states doing, and is it working?

video thumbnail
The number of Americans receiving food assistance through SNAP rose quickly during the recession and remains high. In 2015, 45.7 million Americans received assistance, up from 25.6 million in 2005. During the recession, the federal government offered to waive the work requirement for able-bodied adults without dependent children in states and counties with high unemployment. With the economy improving, many states will be required as of April 1 to restore these requirements. Some have already done so.

What are the results in these states? How have these changes affected work, poverty, and incomes? Have people been left behind?

Join us for a keynote from Gov. Sam Brownback, a discussion of these issues and their federal-policy implications with leaders from two states implementing such efforts, and analysis of early evidence.
