Able-bodied adults, work, and food assistance: What are states doing, and is it working? |

The number of Americans receiving food assistance through SNAP rose quickly during the recession and remains high. In 2015, 45.7 million Americans received assistance, up from 25.6 million in 2005. During the recession, the federal government offered to waive the work requirement for able-bodied adults without dependent children in states and counties with high unemployment. With the economy improving, many states will be required as of April 1 to restore these requirements. Some have already done so.
